What zalgo text is
Zalgo text is regular text with a heap of combining marks on each letter, so the letters seem to bleed up and down the line. The name comes from an old internet horror meme, and the effect has become a general way to make text look broken, glitching or haunted.
Each mark is a separate character that draws on the letter before it, so the text can still be copied, pasted and edited.
The three settings
Marks above climb up from the letters, marks through run across them, and marks below hang down. Switch off the marks above to stop the text reaching into the line above it. Intensity sets how many marks a letter can get, and Shuffle gives the same settings a new pattern.
Using zalgo text
Zalgo text is hard to read, and screen readers may read each mark aloud or skip the text. The result stops at 2,000 characters, and apps draw tall stacks of marks in different ways, so try a short line first. People use it for:
