Add text to GIF

Choose a GIF, type your words and get a new GIF with the text on every frame. Everything happens in your browser, so your GIF is never uploaded and you do not need an account.

This tool needs JavaScript. Turn it on and reload the page to add text to a GIF.

How to use it

  1. Choose your GIF

Select a GIF from your device, or drop one on the box above. It opens in your browser and goes nowhere else.

  2. Type and place your text

Write the words, then pick top, middle or bottom, or drag the text anywhere on the picture. Adjust the size, color, font and outline until it reads well.

  3. Create and download

Select Create GIF. The page adds your text to each frame while a progress bar shows how far along it is. When it is done, download the new GIF.

How the text is added

The page opens your GIF one frame at a time, draws your text on each frame and writes the frames into a new GIF. The text stays in the same place on every frame. The new GIF keeps the display time of each frame, the number of times the original loops and any transparent areas.

All of this runs on your device. Your GIF is not uploaded, there is nothing to install and no account to make, and nothing is saved on our side.

Make the text easy to read

A GIF moves, so the words need to be clear at a glance. These habits help:

  • Keep it short. A few words work better than a sentence on a moving picture.
  • Add an outline when the picture behind the text is busy or changes color. A dark outline helps light text, and a light outline helps dark text.
  • Put the text where the action is not. The bottom is the usual place for a caption and the top for a title.
  • Check the size at the smallest screen the GIF will be seen on. Text that looks large in the preview can be tiny on a phone.

File size and limits

A GIF can use at most 256 colors in each frame, and the new file is made with the same limit. Most GIFs look the same afterwards, but photo-like ones can show small changes in color. The new file can also be larger or smaller than the original, because tools compress GIFs in different ways.

To keep the work quick on any device, the page accepts GIFs within these limits, and it tells you when one is over. Longer and larger GIFs take more time, and you can cancel at any point.

  • Files up to 15 MiB.
  • Up to 600 frames.
  • Frames up to about 2 megapixels, such as 1920 × 1080.

Frequently asked questions

Is my GIF uploaded anywhere?

No. The page reads your GIF and writes the new one on your device, so the file never leaves your browser. There is no account to make and nothing is saved on our side. When you close the tab, the GIF and the result are gone.

Will the new GIF keep its speed and loop?

Yes. Every frame keeps its own display time, the loop count is copied from the original, and transparent areas stay transparent. Only the colors can change a little, because each frame of a GIF is limited to 256 colors.

Why is the new GIF bigger than the original?

Different tools compress GIFs in different ways, and the original may be packed more tightly than this page can write it. The text itself adds very little. If the file is too big for where you want to post it, start from a shorter or smaller GIF.

How big a GIF can I use?

Up to 15 MiB, 600 frames and about 2 megapixels per frame, such as 1920 × 1080. Very long GIFs with large frames can also be too heavy for a browser, and the page tells you if yours is.

Can I change the text partway through, or add text to a video?

Not here. The page adds the same text to every frame of a GIF. To change the words over time, move text along with an object, or caption a video such as an MP4, use a video editor.

Can I put text on a photo instead of a GIF?

Yes, with a different tool. Add text to photo writes your words into a still image so they look printed, painted or lit on a surface in the scene. This GIF tool draws plain text on top of each frame.
