How to write alt text for an image

Three steps from an image to a description you can paste.

  1. Upload your image

Sign in with Google and upload a PNG, JPG or WebP up to 14 MiB: a product photo, a chart, a screenshot or a banner for your website.

  2. Choose a language

The alt text starts in the language of this page. Pick any of the 35 languages; each one is written once for an image, so going back to a language you already chose is instant.

  3. Check and copy

Read the short and the long version beside your image, correct anything the AI got wrong, and copy the one you need into your page, post or document.

Frequently asked questions

What is alt text?

Alt text is a short description of an image for people who cannot see it, such as screen reader users, and for when the image does not load. Search engines read it too. Good alt text says what matters in the image and includes any meaningful text that is visible in it.

How long should alt text be?

The short version aims at 125 characters or fewer, which suits most images, and the page shows how long it is. The long version is two or three sentences, for charts, diagrams and busy images that a short line cannot cover, or for a caption or a nearby paragraph.

Does it name the people in an image?

No. It describes what is visible, such as clothing and actions, and it does not name real people or guess their ethnicity, religion, health or other personal traits. If a name matters in your context, add it yourself once you have checked it.

Is the alt text generator free?

Yes. Writing alt text uses no credits, with or without a plan; you only need to sign in with Google. Credits are only for changing the image itself: editing, translating or removing its text.

Can I get alt text in another language?

Yes. Choose any of the 35 languages EditText.ai supports and both versions are written in it. Text that is visible in the image is quoted as it is written there, not translated. Each language is written once for an image, so asking again is free.

Which files can I upload, and are they private?

Upload a PNG, JPG or WebP image up to 14 MiB after signing in with Google. Your images and their descriptions are private to your account. Check what it writes against the image before you publish it, and leave the alt text empty for a picture that is only decoration.
