Plain text converter

Paste fancy text, such as bold or cursive letters, bubble text, small caps or zalgo, and get plain text back. It removes the marks and swaps each look-alike for its normal letter, in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Paste your text

Paste the fancy text you copied from a bio, a chat or a post.

  2. Check the result

The plain text appears as you paste. If your text is upside down or mirrored, choose that kind of text first.

  3. Copy and paste

Select Copy, then paste the text where you want it and check how it looks there.

What the converter does

Fancy text from a generator is made of look-alike characters, such as mathematical bold letters, circled letters, small capitals and combining marks. The converter takes it back to ordinary letters in three steps:

  • It removes combining marks that do not make an accented letter, such as the stacks of zalgo and glitch text and the lines of strikethrough and underline text.
  • It swaps back look-alikes that have no plain form in Unicode, such as small capitals and black circles and squares.
  • It applies Unicode’s own plain-form mapping (NFKC), which turns bold, italic, script, gothic, double-struck, monospace, circled, squared, wide, raised and lowered letters into plain ones.

What it leaves alone

Accented letters such as é, ñ and ế stay, whether they were typed as one character or as a letter followed by a mark. Text in other alphabets and emoji stay too, and so do the punctuation and spaces of Chinese, Japanese and Korean text. Look-alikes from other alphabets, such as a Cyrillic letter used in place of a Latin one, stay as well, because the converter cannot tell they were chosen for their looks.

NFKC also changes a few symbols that have a plain form, such as ™ to TM and the ligature fi to fi, and full-width Latin letters and digits become normal ones. Styles that use one set of letters for both cases, such as small caps and bubble letters, cannot show whether you typed a capital, so check the capitals in the result.

Upside-down and mirrored text

Upside-down and mirrored text swap letters for others, even ordinary ones such as b and q, and put the text in reverse. The converter cannot guess that, so choose Upside-down text or Mirrored text in the list when yours is turned around. It then swaps every letter back and reads the line from its end.

When it helps

The conversion happens in your browser, so your text is never uploaded. It helps when you want to:

  • Read a fancy bio or message with a screen reader.
  • Search or spell-check text that was written in fancy letters.
  • Paste text into a form or a username field that rejects special characters.
  • Clean up text you copied from a profile or a post.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn fancy text into normal text?

Paste it into the box above. The plain version appears as you paste, and you can select Copy to take it. Choose Upside-down text or Mirrored text first if your text is turned around.

Does it work on zalgo and glitch text?

Yes. Zalgo, glitch, cursed, strikethrough and underline text are ordinary letters with combining marks added, and the converter removes the marks. Very light glitch text can keep an accent where a single mark happens to make a real accented letter, such as an acute on an e.

Why did some of my text not change?

Only characters that have a plain form are changed. Look-alikes from other alphabets, such as Greek or Cyrillic letters used to imitate Latin ones, stay as they are, because they are real letters in their own alphabets.

Will it remove the accents from my text?

No. Accented letters such as é, ñ or ế stay, whether they were typed as one character or as a letter followed by a mark. Marks that do not make a real accented letter, such as zalgo stacks or a strikethrough line, are removed.

Can it read text from a picture or a PDF?

No, only text you paste. To copy the words out of an image, use Image to text. To copy the text out of a PDF, use PDF to text.

Is the plain text converter free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no account and nothing to install. Your text is converted on your device and is never uploaded or saved.
