Fancy text in Discord
Discord shows these styles in messages, display names, server nicknames and server names, because they are ordinary Unicode characters rather than formatting. They keep their look on any phone or computer that has the symbols, which covers most devices made in recent years.
Your username is different. Discord usernames take only lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores, so put fancy styles in your display name or a server nickname instead.
Discord’s own formatting
Discord can format text itself with a few typed symbols. That is easier to edit later and works in the same message as fancy text. Put the symbols around your words, as shown below. Headings and small text only work at the start of a line, with a space after the symbols.
- Bold
**text**- Italic
*text*- Underline
__text__- Strikethrough
~~text~~- Spoiler
||text||- Big heading
# text- Medium heading
## text- Small heading
### text- Small text
-# text
Take care with fancy names
Fancy letters are harder to read and to find. Other people cannot easily mention or search for a name they cannot type, and screen readers may spell out the characters or skip them. Keep fancy text to a short name or a heading, and keep anything people need to read, such as a rule or a link, in plain letters.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a fancy font in my Discord username?
No. Discord usernames accept only lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Use the styles in your display name, in a server nickname or in your messages instead.
Does Discord have its own bold and italic?
Yes. Put two asterisks on each side of your words for bold, or one on each side for italic. The list above also covers underline, strikethrough, spoilers, headings and small text.
How do I make small text or a heading in Discord?
Start the line with one, two or three hash symbols (#) and a space for a heading, from big to small. For small text, start the line with a hyphen, a hash symbol and a space. Both work at the start of a line only.
Why do some of my fancy letters show as boxes?
The device showing the text has no character for that symbol. Most phones and computers made in recent years show every style here, but older ones can miss the newest, such as the black circles and squares. Try the text in a private message first.
Is the Discord font generator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no account and nothing to install. Your text is converted on your device and is never uploaded or saved, so you can try as many styles as you like.
