How the underline is made
Underlined text uses a combining character: an invisible mark that draws a low line under the character before it. The generator adds one after every letter, digit and symbol, so the line runs under each word and stays when you paste it. Spaces get no line, so a small gap shows between words.
Because the line is part of the text, you can copy it into any app that accepts ordinary text. To take the lines off again, paste the text into the plain text converter.
Apps that underline for you
Some apps can underline on their own, which is easier to edit later:
- Discord: put two underscores on each side of your words.
- Google Docs, Microsoft Word and Pages: select the text and press Ctrl+U, or Cmd+U on a Mac.
- Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and X: there is no underline option in a post, so use the generator.
How it can look
Each character carries its own piece of line. In most fonts the pieces join into a clean line, but some fonts leave small gaps or draw the line at a different height. Underlined text also looks like a link, so readers may try to tap it. Screen readers may read the marks oddly, and search usually ignores underlined words, so keep anything important in plain letters.
Frequently asked questions
How do I underline text on Instagram?
Instagram has no underline option. Type your words above, copy the underlined version and paste it into your caption, bio or comment. The line is part of the characters, so it stays after you post.
Can I underline text on LinkedIn or Facebook?
Yes. Posts on both have no underline button, but text from the generator keeps its line when you paste it. Use it for a heading or one key phrase rather than a whole paragraph.
Why does my underline look broken?
Each character carries its own piece of the line, and some fonts draw those pieces at slightly different heights or widths, so small gaps can appear between letters. How it looks depends on the app and on the device of the person reading it.
Does underlined text work as a link?
No. The line is only decoration, so the text is not clickable. Because it looks like a link, readers may try to tap it, so use it sparingly and put real links in plain text.
Is the underline text generator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no account and nothing to install. Your text is converted on your device and is never uploaded or saved, so you can underline as much as you like.
