  3. Copy and paste

Select Copy next to the style, then paste the text where you want it and check how it looks there.

Italics without an italic button

Most social apps strip formatting, so text you italicize in a document arrives upright. Unicode includes complete italic alphabets for mathematical writing, and the generator swaps your letters for those characters, so the slant survives the paste.

Serif italic looks like a book or a magazine, sans italic matches the plain fonts of most apps, and bold italic adds weight to a word that should stand out.

What stays upright

Italic covers the letters A to Z. These italic alphabets have no digits, so numbers stay upright, and accented letters, punctuation, emoji and other alphabets stay as you typed them.

The small h in serif italic is borrowed from the Planck constant symbol, because Unicode left the usual slot empty. It looks like any other italic h, but a screen reader may announce it differently.

Where italic text helps

Use italics for a short phrase. A long paragraph in slanted letters is harder to read, and screen readers may spell out the special characters or skip them. Italic text helps with:

  • A book or film title in a caption.
  • A quote or an aside in a LinkedIn or Facebook post.
  • One word to stress in a message, instead of writing it in capitals.
  • Emphasis in a bio, where there are no formatting options.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write in italics on Instagram?

Instagram has no italic option, so type your text above, copy the italic version and paste it into your caption, bio or comment. The slanted letters are special characters, so they stay slanted after you post.

Can I use italic text on LinkedIn or X?

Yes. Regular posts on both have no italic option, but italic Unicode letters paste in and keep their slant. Use them for a quote, a title or one word, and keep names and keywords you want found in plain letters, because search matches plain text.

What is the difference between serif and sans italic?

Serif italic has the small finishing strokes of a book typeface, and sans italic is plain, like the font in most apps. Both come from math alphabets in Unicode. Bold italic and sans bold italic add weight.

Why are my numbers not slanted?

Unicode has no italic digits in these sets, so numbers keep their normal shape. Accented letters and other alphabets stay as typed too, so a word with an รฉ mixes italic and plain letters.

Is the italic text generator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no sign-in and nothing to install. Your text never leaves your device, so you can try as many versions as you like.
