Styled text on Facebook
Most posts and comments on Facebook have no bold or italic option, but these styles are ordinary Unicode characters, so they paste in and keep their look. They work in:
- Posts on your timeline, in groups and on Pages.
- Comments and replies.
- The Intro section of your profile and a Page description.
- Messenger chats.
Your profile name
Facebook asks for the name you use in everyday life, and its name rules do not allow symbols or unusual capitalization in a profile name. A name in styled letters may be rejected or flagged, so keep your profile name in plain letters and use styled text in posts and your bio instead.
Screen readers and accessibility
Styled letters are special characters, not formatting. A screen reader may read each one by its Unicode name, such as โmathematical bold capital Aโ, or skip the text, so a post written entirely in styled letters can be unreadable to someone who uses one. Translation tools may not understand it either.
Use styled text for a heading or one word, and keep the rest of the post, and anything people need to act on, in plain letters.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make text bold on Facebook?
Most Facebook posts and comments have no bold button. Type your text above, copy a bold version and paste it into your post or comment. The bold letters are special characters, so they stay bold after you post.
Can I use italic or strikethrough text on Facebook?
Yes. Copy the italic, strikethrough or underline version and paste it in. Each is made of characters, so it stays as you pasted it, though the line on strikethrough and underline text can look a little different from one phone to the next.
Can I put a fancy font in my Facebook name?
Not reliably. Facebookโs name rules ask for the name you use in everyday life and do not allow symbols or unusual capitalization, so a styled name can be rejected. Keep your profile name in plain letters.
Can screen readers read these styles?
Often badly. A screen reader may read each letter by its Unicode name or skip the text. For anyone who relies on one, keep important posts in plain letters and use a styled heading or word for emphasis only.
Will Facebook search find text in a fancy font?
Probably not. Search matches ordinary letters, so a post in styled letters may not turn up when someone searches for those words. Keep the keywords you want found in plain text.
Is the Facebook font generator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no sign-in and nothing to install. Your text is converted on your device and is never uploaded or saved, so you can try as many styles as you like.
