Gothic font generator

Type your text to see it in gothic blackletter, often called Old English lettering, then copy the version you like into a bio, a name, a caption or a message. Choose the light gothic or the bold one, which holds up better on small screens.

  3. Copy and paste

Select Copy next to the style, then paste the text where you want it and check how it looks there.

What gothic and Old English text is

Gothic text here means blackletter: the angular, pointed lettering of early printed books and newspaper titles, and the style most people mean by an Old English font. Unicode includes a complete blackletter alphabet, called Fraktur, made for mathematics. The generator swaps each of your letters for its Fraktur twin, so the style stays in the text when you paste it.

The letters are separate characters, not a font. A word in gothic has the same number of characters as in plain text, and you can edit it like any other text after pasting.

Gothic and bold gothic

Gothic is the lighter set, with thin strokes that can look fragile on a small screen. Bold gothic is heavier and holds up better on phones, so it suits names and short headings. Both cover the letters A to Z. Digits, punctuation and accented letters stay as typed.

Five capitals in the lighter set (C, H, I, R and Z) live in an older part of Unicode, so on some devices they look slightly different from the letters around them. Bold gothic comes from a single block and looks even everywhere.

Where gothic text works

Blackletter is hard to read at length, and screen readers may spell it out letter by letter or skip it, so keep it to a name or a short line and keep links and anything people search for in plain letters. It works well in:

  • Bios, names and captions on Instagram, TikTok and Threads.
  • Display names and nicknames on Discord.
  • Gamer tags and clan names, where the game allows special characters.
  • Short titles and headings in posts on apps with no formatting.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gothic and Old English text?

In everyday use they mean the same thing: angular blackletter lettering. This generator uses the Fraktur alphabet in Unicode, which is the style most people expect from an Old English font.

Can I download this as a font file?

No. The letters are Unicode characters, so there is nothing to install, and they work wherever you can paste text. To use blackletter in a design program or a document, install a blackletter font there instead.

Why do some gothic letters look different from the rest?

Five capitals in the light gothic set (C, H, I, R and Z) are stored in an older part of Unicode, and some fonts draw them a little differently. Bold gothic has no such letters, so it looks even.

Can I use gothic text in my Instagram bio or Discord name?

Yes, in bios, captions, display names and nicknames. Usernames on Instagram and Discord take only plain letters, numbers and a few symbols, so keep your username plain.

Can I put gothic lettering on a photo?

Not with this tool, which only works on text you type. To put words on a photo so they look like part of the scene, use Add text. To change words that are already in an image, use Edit text.

Is the gothic font generator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no account and nothing to install. Your text is converted on your device and is never uploaded or saved, so you can try as many versions as you like.
