What small caps are
Small caps are capital letters drawn at the height of lowercase ones, a classic touch in book design and on menus. In Unicode they are phonetic letters that look like small capitals, so the generator swaps each of your letters for its small capital and the look survives a paste. Capitals and small letters both become the same small capital, so you can type in any case.
Q, X and digits
Unicode has a small capital for most of the alphabet. Q is drawn with ǫ, a small o with a tail that looks close to a small capital Q, and there is no small capital x, so x stays a normal lowercase x. Digits, accented letters and other alphabets stay as typed.
Some of the letters come from phonetic symbol sets, so on some devices one or two look a little lighter or different from the rest. Check the result after you paste it.
Where small caps work
Small caps are slower to read than normal text, and screen readers may spell them out or skip them, so keep links, usernames and important information in normal letters. They work well in:
- The first line of a bio, under a name.
- A caption heading or a short label.
- Quiet emphasis in a message.
- Display names in apps that offer no formatting.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type small caps on Instagram?
Type your words above, copy the small caps version and paste it into your bio, name or caption. Instagram keeps the characters as they are. Keep your username and links in normal letters, so people can still find you and tap them.
Is this the same as small caps in Word or Google Docs?
No. In a word processor, small caps is a formatting setting that stays in that file. Here the letters are separate characters, so they keep their look when you paste them into apps that have no formatting options.
Why is the letter x not a small capital?
Unicode has no small capital x, so x stays as typed. Q uses a look-alike, ǫ, and every other letter has its own small capital.
Why do some small caps letters look different from the others?
Many of them come from phonetic symbol sets rather than from the ordinary alphabet, and each device draws them with its own fonts. A letter can look a little lighter, higher or lower on one phone than on another.
Is the small caps generator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser with nothing to install and no account. Your text is converted on your device and is never uploaded or saved, so you can try as many versions as you like.
